On the 70th birthday of the actor Jānis Paukštello, on March 26, a new collection has been created on the Portmas.lv portal of the National Film Center (NKC) – six feature films in which the actor has played important cinema roles, NKC informed. “I like the atmosphere of the cinema itself, the constant readiness to act,” said actor Jānis Paukštello in an interview in the 1970s. “You think, try, find what you need, and – please the engine!”

His first appearance on the screen is an episodic role, Raibais in the film “Keys of the City” (1973), but already the second film role makes the actor famous all over Latvia and for many years – Arvīds Lasmanis in Jānis Streičs’ household comedy “My friend is a serious person”(1975, restored in 2016) is one of the peaks of Jānis Paukštello’s acting life. “Our victory is Paukštello’s special radiance of personality, naivety and childhood were our cover,” explaining director Daira Āboliņa in Jānis Streičs’ magical realism (2016), explaining the film’s success, but Jānis Paukštello himself said in an interview: “Streičs is my greatest author , I can thank him for believing in himself as an actor. ”

The collection of the portal Filmas.lv includes three more feature films by Jānis Streičs, where Jānis Paukštello has played a different character in each. In the post-war dramaForeign passions”(1983, restored in 2016) he has a small but colorful role – his neighbor Ezeriņš, who lost not only one eye in the war, but also his wife, remaining alone with three little girls. However, director Jānis Streičs has especially cherished this episodic image: “Ezeriņš is like a tomcat in boots, such a naive conqueror of the world, a co-runner of the new power. For who sane person could side with the Bolsheviks? So I invented him long fishing boots. Who in the countryside, in Zemgale, would need them? It is clear that he has “nationalized”, someone has been deprived of.

Director Streičs Jānis Paukštello has given another key role in the film “It easily falls in an overgrown ditch”(1986) – Witold, the secretary of the kolkhoz party organization, is almost a relative of Arvīds Lasmanis, a naive idealist who fights from the heart for a better life for all people, but turns out to be powerless in the stagnant and grotesque reality of the Soviets. The film has been digitized especially for this collection from 35mm film tapes, the Latvian National Archives of the Latvian State Archive of Film and Photophono Documents working with the new film digitization equipment.

And another film by Jānis Paukštello in the film Streičs – Boņuk’s father Aleksandrs Paulāns in the classic Gold Fund film “Human child”(1991). Jānis Paukštello, the father of a large family, has also played in the feature film of director Vara Brasla ”Christmas jampadracis“(1993, restored in 2020), where he is a poor music teacher Valdemārs and takes care of five children in the musical Cīrulīši family.
