Biden said he had spent “hours” with Chinese President Xi Jinping when he was vice president in the Barack Obama era. He believes the Chinese president believes autocracy — not democracy — holds the key to the future.
The Democratic president said he had made it clear to Xi Jinping that the United States was not seeking confrontation, but would insist China adheres to international rules for fair competition, fair trade and respect for human rights.
“China has an overall goal … to be the leading country in the world, the richest country in the world, and the most powerful country in the world,” he told reporters at the White House, as quoted. Reuters, Friday (26/3/2021).
“It will not happen on my watch because the United States will continue to develop,” he said.
