Once we start playing Pokémon, the first versions, we find that the Pokémon themselves can die and so much so that there is even a special tower where deceased Pokémon are buried.
But even though we know that they can die, we are not sure what things can affect them in the same way that they affect us humans. One of those things is age.
In the Alola region I have also seen how death affects Pokémon and how they can pass through generations, so we could think that only due to physical damage is that they would lose their lives, but the anime tells us everything contrary.
In an episode of the animated series we can see how an old Pokémon loses its life due to natural causes, this is the episode called “One Journey Ends, Another Begins”
In the episode in question we can see Ash’s fight to save a Stoutland, as they believe he is sick, but once they take him to the Pokémon center, the sick Joy confirms that the dog has already died of natural causes.
That is, not only can Pokémon die when attacked by criminal groups, but they also have to live with the passage of time affecting their physical state, just like all other living beings.
It is certainly an emotional episode and makes us think about life itself … Although perhaps it is better not to delve into our own mortality in this space. We better go play Pokémon.
