He is Matteo Maurizio Pinti, a seven-month-old Italian boy who was hospitalized in early March with an intestinal problem. It soon became apparent that he needed emergency surgery and would have to stay in the hospital for a while. However, at the hospital, Salesi Pediatric Hospital in Ancona, it turned out that both the boy and his mother Roberta Ferrante were infected with Covid-19. The result: both of Matteo’s parents were no longer allowed to enter the hospital.
Fortunately for the family, there was the nurse Katia Sandroni. She promised to take care of Matteo “until he got well.” And she kept her word. Shortly after surgery, Matteo’s parents got a photo – actually one still of a recorded camera image – sent. The image shows how the nurse, dressed in a protective suit, is lying in bed with the boy. Holds him. Play with him. A tender image that went viral in Italy in no time and has since grown into the symbol photo of the healthcare sector during the corona pandemic.
‘Don’t worry, we’ll take care of him’
“I will never forget this,” said Roberta Ferrante. “Not only what the nurse did, but also the efforts of the doctors. They kept calling me to keep me informed of my son’s condition. It was very difficult that I was not allowed to be there myself, but they were still able to calm me down. Don’t worry, ma’am, they said. We take care of your son. This was the most dramatic moment of my life, but when I saw the photo, I finally came back to life after a day-long nightmare. ”
Finally, a small piece of intestine had to be removed from little Matteo. Although he still tested positive for the corona virus, he was allowed to leave the hospital a few days ago. His mother, meanwhile, has written a letter to the hospital staff to thank them.
