Premier League, Manchester United | The Athletic: Nicky Butt felt overlooked in the pursuit of promotion at United

Nicky Butt thanked himself when Manchester United hired their new sporting director.

Earlier this week, Manchester United confirmed that Nicky Butt leaves the club after nine years as a coach and player developer in the club’s academy.

– I know as a player how difficult it is to leave Manchester United, but it feels like the right time to do it now, to get a new challenge. I look forward to checking out the opportunities and building on the experience I have gained over the past nine years, Butt said in the official press release.

– Friction

According to The Athletic The reason for the decision is that the 46-year-old has felt overlooked in the search for a promotion after Manchester United hired their new sports director John Murtough.

Murtough has previously been head of United’s academy, and Butt should not have been willing to have him over him in the United hierarchy.

The two are said to have had widely differing views on how a club should be run, which is explained by the fact that the two come from different backgrounds.

While Butt has a great playing career behind him and a life on the training field, Murtough’s experience comes from the administration.

The friction is said to have built up in recent months, and when the announcement about Murtough came, Butt must have already decided to leave the club.

Solskjær: – We will miss him

In a press release earlier this week, United wrote that Butt has played a key role in bringing out talents such as Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Dean Henderson, Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær believes it is a club legend who is now leaving Carrington.

– We will all miss him at the gym, but Nicky knows that he will always be welcome back here, says Solskjær.

After the national team break, Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be in action against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday 4 April.
