The blue tick next to voice messages could hardly be avoided on WhatsApp: If you wanted to listen to the messages without the sender noticing, you either had to send the voice message by email or share it in another chat. It has not been that cumbersome since a change in mid-March: the blue ticks are now automatically turned off for many voice messages.

Usually WhatsApp announces changes before they happen. This time, however, not: The company did not issue a notification, the blue tick next to voice messages had simply disappeared for some users. Users received a notification that WhatsApp was changing its terms of use, but they did not learn anything about the voice messages.
The read confirmation on WhatsApp can be deactivated very easily: To do this, you first have to go to “Settings”, then to “Account” and then to “Data protection”. Here you can deactivate the “Read receipt” setting.
