Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment of TB

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Every March 24th is celebrated as Day Tuberculosis (TB / TB) Worldwide. Today the world is reminded of how big the impact of tuberculosis is and is raising awareness to end the global epidemic of this disease.

Muhammad Miftahussurur, a specialist in internal medicine at Airlangga University Hospital, said that according to WHO data in 2014, there were 9.6 million TB cases and 1.5 million people died from TB.

The man who is familiarly called Miftah continued, of the total global TB cases, Indonesia ‘accounts for’ 10 percent of cases. This percentage also makes Indonesia in the second highest contributor to TB cases in the world after India (23 percent).

“In Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s prevalence is second only to Timor Leste. In 2014 it was shown that Indonesia had 647 cases out of 100 thousand population. This is a huge number,” said Miftah when contacted. CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (23/3).

In the TBC Day Press conference, the Ministry of Health predicted that there were as many as 845 thousand cases of TB in Indonesia, but only about 30 percent of cases or 349,549 were found, 8,060 of which were drug resistant TB cases.

On the other hand, there is a saying ‘do not know it is not dear’. We need to get to know TB more in order to increase awareness and alertness.

What is TB?

“Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by a so-called germ Mycobacterium tuberculosis, “said Alfian Nur Rosyid, a pulmonary specialist at Universitas Airlangga Hospital, when contacted separately, Tuesday (23/3).

Generally, these pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria attack the lungs the most. However, in fact TB not only attacks the lungs but also all organs of the human body outside the lungs, so it is called extra pulmonary TB.

About 70 percent of TB cases are pulmonary TB, while the rest are extrapulmonary TB or TB that infects organs other than the lungs.

Alfian said the percentage of extra pulmonary TB varied, but on average there were more than 20 percent of cases.

Extra-pulmonary TB can attack various organs of the body including the glands, nerves, heart, digestive tract, kidneys, spine, skin, eyes, ears, intestines, esophagus (esophagus). Whereas in women extra pulmonary tuberculosis can also attack the breasts, ovaries (ovaries).

Child tuberculosis

Tuberculosis or TB disease does not only affect adults. Even children can get TB disease if it is not prevented.

Data belonging to the Ministry of Health in 2020 recorded that there were 349,549 TB cases in Indonesia, of which 32,251 cases were suffered by children.

“TB in adults continues to grow, plus the burden of TB in children where the source of transmission is from the closest adult,” Nadia said in a webinar, Tuesday (23/3).

One way to protect children from TB is to give Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunization to prevent the development of TB disease. BCG immunization can be given to babies after 3 months of age. This step is also considered effective in preventing children from suffering from severe symptoms of TB.
