Winners of the Theater Day Excellence Awards have been announced

As the International Theater Day approaches, the Latvian Theater Workers’ Union (LTDS) has announced the winners of the annual Theater Day Excellence Award, which this year includes Vita Vārpiņa, Ģirts Krūmiņš, Elmārs Seņkovs, Regīna Kaupuža and Gunārs Bībers.

This year’s distribution of Theater Day Excellence Awards is as follows:

Lilita Bērziņa’s award for outstanding performance during the last seasons and artistically high-quality work for many years has been received by Daile Theater actress Vita Vārpiņa.

The actor of the New Riga Theater Ģirts Krūmiņš receives the Harijs Liepiņš Award for brilliant acting during previous seasons.

Director Elmārs Sņkovs receives the Eduards Smiļģis Award for significant, bright innovative directing during previous seasons and for his contribution to the popularization of Latvian theater in Latvia and in the world.

The Helena Tangijeva-Birzniece Award for Merit in Cultural Work, Contribution to the Art of Latvian Ballet and the Upbringing of Young Ballet Artists is awarded to Regīna Kaupuža.

The Jēkabs Duburs Prize for lifelong contribution to the research and teaching of drama theory, history and analysis for countless generations of students is awarded to literary scholar and critic, Emeritus Professor of the Latvian Academy of Culture and Honorary Doctor Gunārs Bībers.

Taking into account the state-of-the-art emergency situation and responding to the epidemiological situation in Latvia, LTDS plans to postpone the presentation of the Theater Day Awards from March 27 at the beginning of the summer, when the epidemiological situation will allow.

Candidates for the award are recommended by Latvian professional theaters, theater critics, the Latvian Professional Ballet Association and the Riga Ballet School of the Vocational Education Competence Center “National Art High School”.
