5 Facts about the First Space Hotel ‘Voyager Station’

Various technological innovations in the world of science have developed rapidly. For example in the field of astronomy, there are always new futuristic ideas to realize the ambition of human colonization in outer space. Various megastructural concepts have been initiated, but none have been realized until now.

Recently, the astronomy universe has been shocked by the news of the construction of the first space hotel, namely Voyager Station or Voyager Station. The space hotel is a project of the Gateway Foundation and its team, the Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC).

This time Voyager Station is in the design stage and is expected to start operating in 2027. Are you curious about the concept design? Come on, consider the following facts.

1. Inspired by the science fiction film “2001: A Space Odyssey”

Quoting CNN, a senior design architect at OAC, Tim Alatorre stated if Voyager Station inspired by the science fiction film entitled “2001: A Space Odyssey“. The film is a film with the theme of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life, which was produced by Stanley Kubrick in 1968.

The sophisticated technology and the comfort of the spaceship in the film are the inspiration for the design Voyager Station. The Alatorre team also said that if possible, Stanley Kubrick’s goal in working on the film was to highlight the gap between technology and humans in outer space.

2. The initial concept design was inspired by the scientist Wernher von Braun

Project Voyager Station actually had been planned since 2018. Initially, the commercial space station project was named ‘from Braun Space Station‘, a legendary German-American rocket scientist.

Wernher von Braun is a prominent figure having been involved in a project to develop rocket technology in Germany during World War II. Not only that, the success of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in landing on the Moon did not escape von Braun’s role in the development of the Apollo 11 aircraft.

John Blincow, founder of the Gateway Foundation and chairman of the OAC, said that initially his commercial space station project was inspired by the works of Wernher von Braun. However, taking the name von Braun as the initial name of the project Voyager Station thought not quite right because the project had nothing to do with von Braun.

Therefore, John Blincow and his team agreed to name their commercial space station ‘Voyager Station‘which is more general.

3. Provide magnificent facilities for 400 people

Launch Space, Voyager Station will provide space for a restaurant, cinema, library, gymnasium, hall, bar, spa and a special space to enjoy the view of outer space. There is also a room with the gravity of the moon that allows tourists to feel the sensation of jumping and running like on the Moon.

It is planned that there are about 24 residential modules that will be designed on Voyager Station with a length of 20 meters and a width of 12 meters. The residence module is not only specially designed for tourists, but also for scientists, astronauts, and several world space research agencies.

4. Has three rings as a supporting feature

The Gateway Foundation on its official page explains the supporting features Voyager Station, that is, the ring feature. There are three main ring frames, namely the inner ring frame, the outer ring frame, and the residential ring frame.

The inner ring frame is specially designed for parking the spacecraft which will transport and unload passengers or cargo. This ring frame is a non-pressure ring frame equipped with a swaying arm and a stabilizer to lock the plane when it pulls over.

Initially there will only be one parking lot, but the Gateway Foundation has planned another parking lot so that the two spacecraft can pull over at the same time. Voyager Station simultaneously.

Then there is the outer ring frame which is connected to the inner ring frame as the entrance to the station. This ring frame is in the form of a triangular colonnade which functions as the main support for the station.

Furthermore, under the outer ring frame there is a housing ring frame. This bezel has pressure and is the largest of the previous two bezel frames. This is because the residential ring frame will become the area of the hotel room as well as other rooms in Voyager Station.

5. There are various variants of gravity

Launch Net Capital, Voyager Station will be located in low Earth orbit or Low Earth Orbit (LEO). In that orbit, Voyager Station will simulate various kinds of gravity tailored to the needs of humans in the station.

For example, the gravity of the moon for scientists, astronauts, and several world space research agencies. There is also a simulated Martian gravity that will be created when the station rotates at a speed of 3 rpm (rotations per minute).

This gravity variant is specially designed to accommodate a variety of experiments for scientists and space experiences for tourists. Artificial gravity systems can rotate for weeks or even months following the experimental time line required.

Those are some interesting facts behind the space hotel concept Voyager Station. Currently the space hotel project is in the design stage and is expected to be completed in 2027. Curious about what it will be like? We just keep on following the development, yes!
