However, he remains hopeful of playing in the Olympiad this summer.
The Argentine has been on the sidelines since injuring his knee in June 2019 at the Queen’s Club.
He has already had three operations on his right knee. The next one will be on Tuesday in Chicago.
“We tried conservative therapy, but the pain is still there,” Del Potro wrote.
“The doctor knows I want to play tennis again and be able to play in the Olympics, so we agreed that the surgery should be done as soon as possible. ”
Del Potro defeated Roger Federer in the final in New York in 2009, earning his only Grand Slam title.
He has suffered several long-term injuries since. This is the fourth time that he has been absent for at least eight months.
32-year-old Del Potro has considered retirement after his father’s death in January. He finally decided to persevere.
“The past few weeks have not been easy. Everything has been so difficult since my father passed away, he said.
“But I also feel the force he is sending me from above. I hope I can overcome this situation. I won’t stop trying. ”
The Tokyo Olympics tennis tournament is scheduled to start on July 24.
