Devastating floods have begun in southeastern Australia. The natural city of Sydney and its environs is also threatened by natural disasters.
Extensive floods in the country were caused by rainfall, which will continue for several more days. Many rivers have crossed the coasts of New South Wales and Queensland, dams have been broken and roads have been washed away.
More than 18,000 people have been evacuated from coastal areas and around Sydney, and thousands of residents of other areas have received evacuation warnings.
Threatened areas are home to about a third of Australia’s 25 million people and have been devastated in the past by drought and widespread forest fires.
Many regions in New South Wales resemble the inland sea. This is how the current situation has been described by the Australian Meteorological Office. Australian officials have described the floods as the most ambitious and dangerous in the last half century. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has offered to help the victims and stressed that the country is once again facing a difficult time. For some people, this is the second time they have had to leave their homes due to a natural cataclysm.
“Several communities that were devastated by the forest fires of 2019 and 2020 are now being flooded, after a long drought. I don’t remember a single moment in our state’s history when such extreme weather happened one after another, even during a pandemic, “admits New South Wales Prime Minister Gledis Beredjiklian.” These are difficult times, but I think we have shown that we can be resilient. “
Residents of Sydney and other cities in the state are encouraged to work from home and avoid traveling as much as possible, as water levels are likely to continue to rise.
Rescue services have carried out at least 750 rescue operations, including evacuating people from the roofs of flooded houses with helicopters and rescuing people trapped in cars. Citizens are also in a hurry to help each other.
“The people around us have been great. We would not be able to cope with everything without our friends and neighbors coming together and showing that our community is strong. Our city has already been through a lot, whether floods or flames are coming – we will cope! ” emphasizes Lisa Salivan, a Sydney resident.
He is warned that the situation will not improve for at least several more days. The region is currently affected by a natural phenomenon called “La Ninja”, where cyclones and prolonged rains form in the Pacific Ocean due to falling temperatures. Scientists have found that climate change has also affected this work phenomenon, making the weather even more chaotic.
