At the current New York Fashion Week, make-up artist Michèle Clausen makes up the beauty looks of numerous labels. In an interview, the Swiss woman reveals which make-up trends await us, how they can be integrated into everyday life and how the morning make-up routine can be shortened.

From September 6 to 11, 2019, designers will present their latest collections for spring and summer 2020 at New York Fashion Week. Swiss make-up artist Michèle Clausen is currently on site and is doing a total of 15 make-up shows -Up of the models responsible – including for well-known brands such as Tibi, Zimmermann and Carolina Herrera.

Reason enough to ask the young make-up artist about the latest make-up trends and her beauty secret.

NZZ Bellevue: Which make-up trends are you interested in
New York Fashion Week noticed?

Michèle Clausen: When it comes to fashion, pastel colors in all nuances are a big trend. In addition, when it comes to eye make-up, people like to use colorful eyelid lines in similar tones, natural, defined eyebrows and shiny lip gloss.

For many women, the looks of the catwalks are a little too daring. How can such trends be implemented as an everyday look?

For example, at the fashion show by Son Jung Wan, a Korean designer, we used an eyeliner in neon yellow. In order to integrate this striking trend color a bit more discreetly into the day make-up, I would only apply a touch of neon color to the inner corner of the eye and add a classic, black eyeliner.

Or the voluminous eyebrows that are so trendy at the moment: Often all the hairs are brushed against the direction of growth and fixed. For the everyday version, I recommend brushing only the front third of the brow a little and defining the other two thirds with an eyebrow pencil.

Which product do you think every woman needs?

Mascara is half the battle for any make-up – I love to give my lashes a nice curve and definition with the Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara.

For New York Fashion Week you implemented the trends for the coming spring. Which make-up looks are trendy this fall and winter?

What is extremely noticeable for the current season is the change from matte lipsticks to very shiny looks. Of course, this does not mean that the matte lipsticks should no longer be used – they can be combined with a neutral or slightly tinted lip gloss.

You have to constantly work under time pressure at fashion shows. What tips can you use to shorten your make-up time in the morning?

In order to make the make-up ritual more efficient, it helps to establish a routine with a well thought-out order. I recommend applying the skin care in the morning directly after showering and using the exposure time for hairstyling or breakfast. In this way, the skin is optimally prepared for the foundation.

To save time with eye make-up, I recommend using cream eye shadow sticks. You can easily blend them with your finger. Thanks to their creamy texture, they are quicker to apply and last longer than regular powder eyeshadows.

The brows can be shaped with a tinted brow mascara. The cheeks and lips can be emphasized with a cream blush, which is also simply applied with the fingers.

Trends or not – wWhat beauty look is timelessly beautiful?

An absolute classic is a radiant complexion paired with a fine eyeliner in brown or black. Add black mascara and nude lipstick – this look always works.

Finally, can you tell us your secret beauty tip?

No matter how great, high-quality products you can have, the result will still not be so good if your skin is not properly prepared for them. Women are often unaware of the importance of this step. That is why I recommend regular consultation in order to find the right care products for the respective skin type.
