The Mail on Sunday is not putting an apology to Meghan Markle on the front page for now. The publisher of the newspaper, Associated Newspaper Limited, may unexpectedly appeal against a ruling to do so.
The judge previously ruled that the Mail on Sunday had to post a statement on the front page apologizing to the Duchess of Sussex. This statement must also be available on the newspaper’s website.
The judge found that the newspaper violated her privacy by publishing a much-discussed letter from Markle to her father Thomas in 2018. Her copyright has also been infringed, because a large and important part of the letter was published in the articles.
The publishing house of Mail on Sunday hwas given extra time by the judge on Monday (until April 6) to appeal. If that happens, the newspaper does not have to publish an apology for the time being.
Markle sent the handwritten letter to her estranged father Thomas Markle after her wedding in May 2018. In it she wrote, among other things, that he had “broken her heart into a million pieces.”
