AKURAT.CO Can you believe that 30 million years ago there were flying sharks? Although it sounds strange, shark species with elongated fins that are believed to resemble stingrays are in fact on earth.
Fossil remains that were found in a mine in Mexico, an ancient shark named Aquilolamna milarcae has a body length of about 1.6 meters while its wings reach nearly 2 meters.
“Because this shark probably eats plankton, it doesn’t need to go fast. Like modern manta rays, swimming relatively slowly is enough to eat plankton,” said Romain Vullo of the University of Rennes, one of the study’s authors.

The shark is believed to have existed in the Cretaceous era about 30 million years before manta rays.
After being asked to describe the shape of the shark the results were very strange and had wings.
“In evolution, this tells us that sharks occupy several ecological niches that are currently limited to other groups, such as rays,” he said.
