Some of the 220 Chinese ships can be seen moored at Whitsun Reef, an area of reef that the Philippines declares as its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The Philippine National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea has released photos of the hundreds of ships.

On Sunday, the Philippine defense chief demanded that more than 200 Chinese ships he said were manned by militias leave the reef in the South China Sea that is claimed by Manila and Beijing.
“We call on China to stop this attack and immediately recall these vessels which violate our maritime rights and violate our territorial borders,” Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement as quoted. DW.com, Monday (23/3/2021).
He warned that the Philippines would uphold its sovereign rights.
Philippine Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin later tweeted that Manila had filed a diplomatic protest over the presence of hundreds of Chinese ships.
The Chinese Embassy in Manila is not ready to comment.
