The winter disaster in the USA continues: 10 people have already died in the snow masses.
A good 80cm of fresh snow fell on Thursday, together with record amounts of snow from the previous days are piling up to over two meters in some cases. The area around Niagara Falls is sinking in snow, and it continues to snow. The city of Buffalo, New York State, is particularly hard hit. At least ten people have died as a result of the onset of winter.

Snow chaos in New York

–How does this snow mass come about:
A very special, regional weather phenomenon is responsible: the lake effect. Cold air soaks up moisture over the still warm Great Lakes – in the case of Buffalo over Lake Erie. Snow clouds arise and are carried inland by the wind. This has happened almost continuously in the last few days, as this video shows:Motorists were stuck for hours:
Hundreds of cars were stuck in the snow for hours and at first evacuation was out of the question. On Thursday, all drivers were safe, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had rushed to the region himself. Most of the highways around Buffalo were closed, but were anyway impassable.Video: Onset of Winter in the USA:
Record snow chaos:
“Upstate New York”, the northern region of the state on the Canadian border, is used to harsh and snowy winters. A few days ago it was a mild 15 degrees Celsius – and that’s how warm it should be again on Sunday and Monday. Further precipitation is predicted, which would then come down as rain. Helpers fear flood and mud chaos. Now comes the tide:
Things could get worse at the weekend: It should be significantly warmer. It is feared that meltwater and rain will then create new chaos. If snow masses on the roofs get wet, buildings threaten to collapse, warn the authorities. “The snow then initially acts as a sponge that absorbs the water,” said Mark Poloncarz from Erie County to CNN. In contrast, the sun was shining in the city of New York, 600 kilometers southeast.© oe24

NHL and NFL have to postpone games:
As the ice hockey league NHL announced on Thursday, the Buffalo Sabers’ home game against the New York Rangers scheduled for Friday cannot take place. Since the home of the Buffalo Bills is also covered by a thick blanket of snow, the National Football League NFL announced that the game against the New York Jets cannot be played on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The match has been moved to Detroit and will now be played on Monday. Due to the amount of snow, the Bills have not been able to train this week.–
