An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck off the north coast of Japan on Saturday. According to the Japanese meteorological service, the quake occurred at a depth of 60 kilometers below the sea floor. Residents of the Miyagi region were warned of a tsunami about 1 meter high. After an hour, that warning was withdrawn.
As far as is known, the earthquake caused limited damage. A shop assistant from the city of Ishinomaki told the public broadcaster that many bottles have broken on the floor. Elsewhere, the power went out in about 200 households. There are no reports of injuries or collapses.
The quake was felt hundreds of miles from the epicenter. As a precaution, train traffic was stopped and various nuclear power plants in the region were inspected. So far, no reports of damage have come from there either.
On February 13, a seaquake with a magnitude of 7.3 also took place in Japan. Then 120 people were injured.
