Nick Foligno is no longer the player he once was.
That is true. He has never amassed more than 35 points in a season since the 2016-2017 campaign. Offensive production is no longer necessarily there. However, the intense player capable of causing a spark in a game, the captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets, is still there.
An unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, the 33-year-old winger could end the campaign in a new guise. The Jackets currently sit fifth in the NHL Central Division standings. Two small points behind the Chicago Blackhawks and the last pass for the playoffs.
Columbus has lost in nine of his last 13 meetings. Things are not going well in Ohio. If, luckily, the team gets off to a successful streak, they might be tempted to retain the services of their captain for the playoffs.
If, however, the boat does not replace itself, some buyers should be interested in Foligno’s services.
During TSN’s Insider Trading segment on Thursday, Pierre LeBrun mentioned the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders as potential buyers for the veteran.
