This recommendation is given given that blood clots have only been reported in patients under the age of 55, the regulator said.
Apart from this restriction, the use of the vaccine in France must be resumed “without delay”, the statement said.
The procedure, in which the vaccine was injected into Prime Minister Jean-Castex, who is 55 years old, was broadcast live on television a few hours later, in an attempt by the authorities to increase confidence in AstraZeneca vaccines.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Thursday that the AstraZeneca vaccine was “safe and effective” and “not associated with an increased risk of thromboembolic events or blood clots”.
However, the Agency cannot completely rule out the link between rare cases of thromboembolism and the vaccine and has therefore launched further rare case studies to understand the issue.
According to Dominica Le Gilidek, head of the French health regulator, such cases are “very rare” but also “serious” for people who have been vaccinated.
Pending further information, those under 55 should be vaccinated with three other vaccines approved in France: Pfizer / BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.
By March 16, 25 such blood clots had been identified in Europe in people under the age of 55, nine of whom had died. “Most are women,” Le Gilidek said.
In France, 1.4 million doses of AstraZeneca have been injected, and two people, a 51-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, have had blood clots, the official said.
