When Foreign Media Reveals Aprilio Manganang’s Old Story Protested by the Philippines

Jakarta

Former Indonesian volleyball athlete, Aprilio Manganang, who was diagnosed with the disease hipospadia and live corrective surgery before the court’s gender status was determined by the court as male, it was also highlighted by foreign media.

It is known that on this Friday (19/3), the Tondano District Court (PN) in North Sulawesi decided that Manganang’s gender status changed to male. In the verdict that was delivered in the online trial, the panel of judges also granted the change of name Aprilia Santini Manganang became Aprilio Perkasa Manganang.

As reported by the Russian media, RT, Friday (19/3/2021), the old story of Manganang was raised in an article entitled “Debate breaks out after Indonesian women’s volleyball star confirmed to be a MAN”.

“One of Indonesia’s top female volleyball players, Aprilia Manganang, has been biologically confirmed male, sparking an online debate about what this meant for her previous performances for her team,” wrote RT beginning her article.

The RT article reviews how Manganang retired from his profession as an athlete in 2020 and joined the Indonesian Army. RT quoted a statement by the Indonesian Army which said that Manganang was not transgender, because he was male from birth with a health problem called hypospadias – a genital deformity experienced by male babies.

“Aprilia’s gender status has long been a topic of debate, as the player’s masculine body often stands out from other female players, with opponents constantly questioning the gender of the athlete,” RT said in his review.

RT also reviewed the protests that the Philippines raised for the Manganang gender at the 2015 SEA Games. “At the 2015 SEA Games, the Philippine team asked the organizers to take a gender test, but their application was rejected, with Aprilia insisting that she is a woman,” wrote RT.

“These revelations sparked debate on social media, with some users even calling on the international volleyball authorities to ban the Indonesian team, which allegedly benefited from years of unfair advantage with someone who is biologically male competing against women. However, others, rejecting calls that, “added the RT article.
