Technology is becoming more and more important and progressive in today’s world. MINT jobs (math, IT, natural sciences and technology) are in demand on the job market. However, the typical image of a technical profession is in some cases still quite out of date. Donau Uni Krems has therefore developed an app that is intended to raise parents’ awareness in this area.
“There are already a lot of projects in the field of STEM funding for children, but still few for parents,” reports Natalie Denk from the project team at Danube University Krems. The E-MINT app was therefore specially developed for parents with children between the ages of 0 and 14 and is aimed at parents who want to encourage their children more in the MINT area.
The developers want to arouse interest in MINT professions. “Parents have a very important role in this. They can be a role model for what image they create for these professions and how they deal with stereotypes,” says Denk.
Promote interest among girls
The app is intended to promote the interest of girls in particular and to break up typical gender roles. “We want to get the image of the typical technical profession out of our heads,” says Denk, “and for example show how creative these jobs can be”.
The app conveys knowledge about training paths in the STEM field, new professions in this field, career choices and gender stereotypes. This is conveyed through storytelling, comics and workshops. “The goal is to bring something to talk about in the family,” says Denk.
