Town planning. An application school for the catering and hotel industry should emerge a stone’s throw from the museum. The decommissioning of elementary Jean-Macé is recorded, the promise of sale of land by the City of Le Havre is signed. But the project is already debated.

Should we take the opportunity to extend the reflection around the redevelopment of the Place du Vieux-Marché, at the foot of the museum? Do we even know what will be achieved there? And with what guarantee? The City has barely endorsed the decommissioning of the space and signed a promise to sell on condition that the project is already debated. That of the creation of an application school for the catering and hotel industry in the premises and courtyard of the former Jean-Macé school.
Didier and Léa Lassarat, owners of the restaurant Les Enfants Sages, installed since September 2015 in the former house of the director of the same school, plan to make this investment there. A project on which the interested parties (also at the head of the Vent d’Ouest hotels in Le Havre, the Maisons de Léa in Honfleur, the Pins de César in Saint-Jouin-Bruneval and the Chamois d’Or in Alpe d’Huez ) do not wish, for the time being, to express themselves.
It should be an establishment allowing people in the process of retraining to learn the hotel and restaurant management professions. As well as training the group’s executives. The principle of the demonstration school allows them to learn in situ. Concretely, the building should, on the ground floor, accommodate a restaurant open to the public, as well as hotel rooms and offices on the upper floors. Finally, part of the old courtyard should be occupied by a terrace dedicated to the activity of the restaurant.
The loss of a public space
Attractive on paper, but disturbing in the eyes of the opposition. Pierre Bouysset wonders about the relevance “ to privatize a public space which could advantageously complement the Place du Vieux-Marché. Especially since the former Jean-Macé school and the museum are two structuring elements for understanding the history of the site. Finally, the presence of trees that provide shade could make it possible to install games, pleasure, in the public space. ».
Gérald Maniable denounces, for his part, ” an attack on vocational schools, in particular Jules-Le Cesne [lycée des métiers de l’hôtellerie, donc de formation initiale, proposant également un restaurant d’application, NDLR] ».
Enthusiastic, the municipal team is reassuring. This project brings back Édouard Philippe ” several years back. When the City had ceded the director’s house to turn it into a restaurant. We have seen the enrichment of the plot. The establishment which has found its audience contributes to expanding the commercial offer. I would understand the anguish if there was no precedent. If they were complete strangers ».
His first assistant Jean-Baptiste Gastinne is delighted “ that the Notre-Dame district attracts public and private projects in order to improve the environment, the attractiveness (…) At this stage, there is no planned building extension. Regulatory means providing us with a guarantee. Because we are within the Unesco perimeter. Because the site is under the watchful eye of the architect of the Bâtiments de France ».
