Covid-19: mental health and depressive states after confinement

The youth are the most affected with 22% of 15-24 year olds who reported symptoms of a depressive state when they were 10.1% in 2019. This figure is significantly higher than that of the average of the upper age groups (12.1%) . More than one in four young women and just under one in five young men are affected.

The women are also – although to a lesser extent than young people – particularly vulnerable: 15,8% in 2020 against 12.5% in 2019 declared symptoms suggestive of a depressive state. The study notes in particular that “being confronted with violent, aggressive or degrading behavior on the part of one’s spouse or partner is also linked to the depressive syndrome“. Otherwise, domestic violence increased by 9% in 2020 compared to 2019.

Prevalence of depressive syndromes in France in 2014, 2019 and May 2020, by age group and sex.

Four problems of discomfort or even depressive symptoms have increased significantly:

  • sleep disturbances;
  • loss of interest in doing things;
  • depressed mood;
  • difficulty concentrating.

According to the study, more than one in five living in a apartment without balcony presented a depressive syndrome. In addition, having been confined away from home, living in overcrowded homes or, conversely, living alone or alone with his or her children increases the risk of a depressive state.
