Geesthacht (LOZ). The SPD parliamentary group Geesthacht will apply to the Geesthacht main committee on March 18 to try out the live broadcast of the council meeting on YouTube.
So that they start the thread of their test assignment from August 2020, with which the possibilities of video transmission of council meetings on the Internet should be tested. In October 2020, the administration outlined in its response which framework conditions must be met and which costs are to be expected. The Main Committee did not make a decision at its meeting at the time. At the request of the CDU, the request was referred to the parliamentary groups for consultation.
The SPD assumes that there has been enough time for a consultation in the parliamentary groups since then. The SPD parliamentary group has given advice and is proposing to initially broadcast the meetings of the council on the Internet for one year on a trial basis. Certain preparations have to be made for this, so that the SPD expects that broadcasts could begin in the third quarter. After evaluating the experiences with the transmissions, it would have to be decided whether there should be a continuation.
Why does the SPD parliamentary group want a trial run? “Experience should be gained as to whether the offer is accepted, after all there are additional costs. There are also fears expressed by other parliamentary groups in previous deliberations that the counseling culture could adversely change. On the other hand, from the SPD’s point of view, new media can increase interest in local politics and give citizens easier access, ”said Geesthacht SPD chairman Julian Peemöller on his party’s proposal.
Broadcasting the council assembly should not be confused with a virtual council meeting. The very strict legal requirements of the municipal code still apply here.
