Task:
A patient is given a medication via an infusion into the blood, after which the medication is broken down by the body in a more or less uniform manner. The graph describes the rate of change in the amount of medication in the patient’s body in the patient’s body.
a) How long does the infusion take and how many ml of the drug is given to the patient?
b) Calculate how many ml of the drug are in the patient’s blood after 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 20 min, 30 min, 35 min.
c) Also sketch the graph that describes the amount of medication in the patient’s body as a function of time. What connections can be seen between this graph and the graph of the rate of change?
The graph describes the rate of change in the amount of medication in the patient’s body. The infusion / degradation rate in ml / min is shown on the y-axis, from -0.2 to 0.5. The times minutes from 0 to 35 are shown on the x-axis. The graph describes the rate of change in the amount of medication in the patient’s body. So the graph shows a horizontal line at y = 0.5 from x = 0 to 10 and then another horizontal line at y = -0.2 from x = 10 to 35.
Problem / approach:
For a) I found out that the infusion takes 35 minutes and 5 ml of the drug is administered.
With b) I don’t know how to calculate that. I would maybe first multiply 5 and 10 by 0.5 and the values from 15 to 35 by -0.2?
And for c) I would then simply sketch the values from b) in a graph.
