The world’s first – and it will soon come to Norway

It started cautiously, but now the selection of electric cars on the market is starting to become solid. Everything from small and cheap city cars, via several models in the Golf class and family cars – and to large and expensive SUVs.

But even though today there is a lot to choose from on the electric car front, we actually completely lack a type of car that has traditionally been in great demand: namely station wagons.

The car manufacturers have instead chosen to focus on compact cars, sedans – and not least SUVs.

But now it is not long until the first electric station wagon arrives in Norway. It is perhaps a little surprising that it does not come from one of the brands that have long sold electric cars in Norway. No, here we are talking relatively recent MG – which debuted with electric car last year.

Already sold in China

Their crossover ZS has been a great success in the Norwegian market and is now approaching 4,000 cars sold. In the autumn, it will be joined by two more electric cars: One of them is the station wagon MG5 Electric.

We at Broom have previously written about this car, which is already on the market at home in China. There it goes by the name Roewe Ei5.

Both MG and Roewe are part of the Chinese giant group SAIC. They have chosen MG as the spearhead in Europe, so it is natural that the car is sold under that name.

No big design bumps, here MG has clearly prioritized the luggage compartment, it is a solid 578 liters.

578 liters of luggage space

It is expected that the car will receive some changes on the way to the European market. But exactly what this means, we do not yet know much about.

What we do know is that the MG5 Electric is a relatively compact station wagon. It is just over 4.5 meters long, which means that it is in the same class as, among others, VW Golf, Ford Focus and Opel Astra.

However, there is nothing to say about the luggage compartment volume. The car will swallow away 578 liters, thus we are talking solid family car space. With the rear seat folded down, the volume grows to over 1,400 liters.

There will be no lightning

What about the range? It should be around 400 kilometers, measured according to the WLTP method. With that, MG places itself quite in the middle of the field here.

Charging speed is not official yet, but it should not end up with anything particularly below 75 kW, in order to be competitive.

MG states that the engine has an output of 185 horsepower and 280 Nm. This gives acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 8.3 seconds. This is a relatively moderate number for an electric car to be.

The prices are not ready yet, but there should be good opportunities for MG5 Electric to start below 300,000 kroner.

Favorable prices

Two important things for many Norwegian customers in the end: MG5 can tow a trailer of up to 500 kilos (then we are talking garden trailers of not too large size) and it can have 75 kilos on the roof.

Prices are not ready yet, but we expect MG to continue the pricing policy they have started with at ZS. The starting price here is a very favorable 229,000 kroner. MG5 will probably be more expensive, but there should be good chances that this too will start at less than 300,000 kroner.
