Rutte can go on for four years, and formation seems obvious

The VVD and D66 are now clearly in the process of forming, political commentator Frits Wester also sees. “The VVD has regained its confidence after the campaign around Rutte.” In recent days, the party seemed to lose some seats in the poll, but the VVD members will be happy with the final result.

‘Big silver medal for D66’

The big winner is D66. Wester: “The story in recent days was about which party would be second. That place is big for the D66, a big silver medal.” According to Wester, the trend already started after the RTL debate. “And what you often see is that it accelerates.”

The losers of the evening? Especially the left fell hard. GroenLinks went from 14 to 8 seats, just like the SP. “It is one big battlefield on the left. The PvdA lost the previous elections considerably, and has not returned. In total, the three of them are smaller than D66.” CDA also lost, the party went from 19 to 14 seats.

Other winners

In addition to the VVD and D66, there were also other winners. Forum for Democracy, Volt and JA21 will be happy. “Really very clever of Volt. Still a relatively unknown party”, says Wester. The parties BIJ1, BoerBurgerBeweging, would now also have a seat in the House of Representatives.

The formation then. Together, the VVD and D66 already have 61 seats. With CDA there would be 75. But that party lost, after the 19 seats in 2017. “The CDA will have to count their knots, but they will want to participate in the coalition.”

Maybe a fourth party

Previously, it seemed that the three parties would already have enough for a majority, but that is not the case now. If it stays that way, a fourth party is needed. Frits Wester had actually expected a fourth game anyway, even if that had not been necessary. “I expect there to be a left-wing party, also to give D66 more comfort. Then you end up with the PvdA or GroenLinks.”

Both Jesse Klaver (GroenLinks) and Lilianne Ploumen (PvdA) do not rule out government participation in advance. The leader of GroenLinks believes that “every party must take responsibility”. For his colleague from the PvdA, the most important thing is: “where can I best represent the interests of my constituents.”
