Norgesgruppen extends the recall of beef products due to salmonella findings to apply to steaks and fillets from the same batch of raw materials.
On 11 March, Norgesgruppen recalled all minced meat, chop dough and burgers from batches that may contain salmonella that were discovered in imported meat from Germany.
The batch of beef was imported to Norway by Prima Jæren. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has previously stated that they follow up the business.
It was at the beginning of March that several cases of infection with the intestinal bacterium Salmonella Enteritidis were registered in several Norwegian counties. Ten people became so ill that they had to be hospitalized.
Found similarities with meat sample
The current sample of the meat was taken by Prima Jæren herself, at the end of January this year. Preliminary analysis showed findings of salmonella. The Veterinary Institute identified that it is Salmonella Enteritidis through its own analyzes.
When FHI discovered that people had become salmonella-sick, the Veterinary Institute and FHI compared the samples, and found that they were genetically similar. Both samples were analyzed using the method called whole genome sequencing.
Several beef products are now being recalled, including more steaks and fillets. All the products covered by the recall have expired and are no longer in store, but consumers can have the products in the freezer.
