Windmills and drones may become quieter in the future thanks to a study by Eindhoven University of Technology. For this, the wing noise of hummingbirds was measured. Hummingbirds can hang ‘still’ in the air. By studying how the birds do this, the researchers hope to find ways to make flying or moving devices quieter.
12 high-speed cameras, 2,175 microphones and 6 hummingbirds were used for the study.
