The New York police announced Tuesday the opening to the public of its statistics on crime, with for example interactive maps on the internet allowing to know everything about a particular neighborhood.

Website https://compstat.nypdonline.org documents over a week, 28 days and for the current year the number of murders, rapes, burglaries, gun victims and other crimes.

This program, updated every week, allows you to select a district, to see the place, the date, and even the time of a crime. The tables proposed also allow us to see the trend from one year to the next.

For example, 36 murders have been committed since the start of the year in New York compared to 52 for the same period last year, a drop of 30.8%. The map shows that they were mostly committed in Brooklyn, spread over the day, but with two dark hours, 9 a.m. (4 murders) and 10 p.m. (5). The map allows you to zoom in and see exactly the place, and by clicking on the place of the murder, we learn what time and on what day it took place.

“This transparency that we are trying to achieve is in many ways unprecedented,” Police Chief Bill Bratton said at a press conference.

“The site gives everyone the opportunity to research what is important to them: their street, their neighborhood, their borough. This kind of clarity is not only useful information, it also builds the relationship between the police and the community, ”Mr. Bratton also said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio was delighted that the New York police force is the most technologically advanced in the country.

Some 25,000 individual smartphones have been distributed to police officers since last summer, with a final target of 36,000.

These efforts are part of an ongoing police modernization, a technological “revolution” that Bratton says is only just beginning. It should in particular make it possible by the end of the year to see in real time where all the city’s police cars are located, allowing faster mobilization in the event of an incident.

Until now, it was possible for the public to consult the statistics of the New York Police Department on its website, in the form of a weekly table of crime broken down into broad categories, without specifying location, date or date. hour.

The New York Police force has some 34,450 uniformed officers.
