BEIJING, iNews.id – Huawei plans to more aggressively monetize its patent portfolio. The Chinese company will charge cellphone makers like Apple a royalty fee which is capped at $ 2.50 per device to license its 5G patent collections.
Competitors such as Nokia and Ericsson are currently charging companies access to their 5G technology and significantly less than $ 7.50 per device cost, causing years of litigation between Apple and Qualcomm.
Huawei estimates the strategy will help it generate an additional 1.3 billion in revenue between 2019 and the end of 2021. According to CNBC, an estimated 18.3 percent of Huawei’s 5G patent family belongs to the Standard Essential Patent (SEP) category.
As the name suggests, it is very important for wireless networking standards like 5G and LTE. In most cases, cellphone manufacturers cannot make devices that can access these networks without licensing some of these patents.
