Schiphol’s German counterpart dives into the red | NOW

Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport ended 2020 with a loss of € 690 million. The red numbers are the first loss for the German airport operator in twenty years.

The negative result is due to the corona crisis, which virtually brought air traffic to a standstill. Passenger flows in Frankfurt decreased by nearly three quarters last year. The airport welcomed 18.8 million travelers last year.

Fraport’s result is comparable to that of Schiphol. The Dutch airport operator ended 2020 with a loss of 563 million euros. Schiphol welcomed 71 percent fewer travelers. In total, almost 21 million travelers traveled to and from the airport last year.

For a long time, Frankfurt Airport was the busiest European airport after Heathrow in London, Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Schiphol. Frankfurt has now dropped to sixth place, partly due to the emergence of Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow and the new Istanbul Airport in Turkey.

For this year, Frankfurt Airport is counting on 20 to 25 million travelers. This is expected to bring the group’s turnover to 2 billion euros. The company also expects to close this year with a loss. The result will probably be better than this year.
