F1 will test with HDR TV broadcasts this season

Sports channel BT Sport has already experimented with HDR broadcasts in Great Britain in the past year. Sky Sports, which owns British Formula 1 rights, wants to have the infrastructure ready by the summer to enable HDR broadcasts. In the United States – the backyard of F1’s parent company Liberty Media – NASCAR, among others, uses the new technology.

The big breakthrough of HDR is expected to take place during the Olympic Games this summer. Ian Holmes, Formula 1 media director, is enthusiastic about the developments. “One of the things we are looking at specifically is HDR, high dynamic range. This can show fast moving objects very well. We will be conducting tests this year, which is potentially the next step in expanding our offering. ” In addition, it is important that there is a demand for HDR. “We have to look carefully at who could take it. If we offer a live feed tomorrow, few people would be able to take advantage of it. Sometimes you have wonderful technology in house and the broadcasters are ready for it, but the equipment of the people at home is not yet ready. ”

It is mainly with that knowledge in mind that Formula 1 looks at the Summer Games in Tokyo with an oblique eye. “The Olympics are always a push, because it is once every four years. There is often a lot of technology coming out of it, so I am very interested in what will happen now in the Games [technologieland] Being Japan. I expect HDR to be something we can be very excited about. ”
