Jakarta –
More than a hundred sinkhole or giant hole which gaped to the ground suddenly appeared in Croatia at a time not far apart. This phenomenon confused scientists who then carried out the research.
The appearance of so many sinkholes in succession began after two large earthquakes struck central Croatia in December 2020. Scientists believe there is a geological event behind the appearance of the sinkhole, but the speed with which the sinkhole appears makes them intensively investigate it.
“Experts say this sinkhole will form naturally over time, but earthquakes become a kind of catalyst that speeds up the whole process,” said one resident, Nenad Tomasevic, who was quoted as saying detikINET from Yahoo News, Tuesday (16/3/2021).
It usually takes decades to centuries for sinkholes to form in limestone-rich soil. However, a large earthquake shortens the time. The problem is, sometimes sinkholes appear under or close to people’s homes so that the occupants must be evacuated.
In Croatia, several giant hole which appear up to 30 meters wide and some have a depth of up to 15 meters. Local scientists together with experts from Italy and Slovenia want to reveal the root of the problem, especially how earthquakes and other geological phenomena trigger it.
“We are planning several exploration methods here. We have carried out several geophysical, seismic and electrical profiles. We will scan the largest sikhole to map the morphology of water in its depth,” said one scientist, Josip Terzic.
Most of the sinkholes appeared in Petrinja City which made residents feel anxious. Hundreds giant hole it comes after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that killed 7 residents there.
