The Grammy Awards were dominated by women. The recording of the year was made by Billie Eilish, the record was broken by Beyoncé and Swiftová – ČT24 – Czech Television

Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles kicked off with performances by singers Harry Styles and Billie Eilish. The awards, which were postponed from the original January date due to the coronavirus pandemic, were accompanied by strict hygiene measures. The stars of the American music scene had to keep their distance and wear veils.

“We will never forget 2020, but we are full of hope for the future,” said actor Trevor Noah, many of the guides to the gala evening.

Peralice Beyoncé, discovery of Megan Thee Stallion

Beyoncé won several awards on Monday night, including the best R&B song for the song Black Parade celebrating black culture, reaching a record 28 Grammys. She also participated in the song Savage, which earned her and rapper Megan Thee Stallion victory in the category of the best rap song.

Megan Thee Stallion won the prestigious Discovery of the Year award from the ceremony, as the first rapper since 1999. “I don’t want to cry. All nominees in this category are so great, “she commented on the victory. “It was a difficult year, but we managed it,” the rapper recalled the effects of coronavirus on public life.

Black topics also touched on the Grammy

For the 23-year-old R&B singer HER, this year’s victory is already the third Grammy Award. The lyrics in the title of the song I Can’t Breathe were repeated before his death by an African-American George Floyd. He died last May when a policeman knelt on his neck for a few minutes. His death sparked a wave of protests against police violence and racism in the United States and around the world. In the video for the song, HER recalls demonstrations and the names of other blacks who died in police action.

The theme of racism and the position of blacks in the USA appeared in other compositions of the evening, including the already mentioned and also awarded Blake Parade song by Beyoncé. “Proceeds from this single went to support black entrepreneurs,” recalls music publicist Honza Dědek. Rapper Lil Baby performed at the ceremony with the song The Bigger Picture, complemented by an edge scene on stage, in which the musicians portrayed the intervention of white police officers against a young black man.

“Last year’s riots over George Floyd’s death marked the ceremony. The president of the academy said that the Grammy would try to follow the path of even greater diversity. At the end of the evening, the headline appeared that the academy condemns any manifestations of violence and racism, “notes Dědek.

Another award for Billie Eilish, a record for Taylor Swift

Nineteen-year-old Billie Eilish, who dominated the award last year with a victory in all major categories, won the award for best record for the second time in a row this year. This year for the minimalist song Everything I Wanted. However, upon acceptance, she stated that the award would belong more to Megan Thee Stallion for the mentioned Savage recording.

Swift, who released her eighth studio album Folklore last summer, matched Monday’s third album victory of the year with music giants such as Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Paul Simon. The only four-time winner in this category is a man from behind the scenes of Tom Coyne’s music production, who has participated in a number of stars, including Swift and Beyoncé.

Two other famous singers, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, won the award for the best musical performance in a duet or group for the single Rain on Me, defeating the South Korean boy band BTS, which entered the show from a distance with Dynamite songs. The British pop singer Dua Lipa received the award for the best pop vocal album for the album Future Nostalgia.

Kanye West impressed with his Christian album, Chick Corea by jazz

Before the very beginning of the ceremony, several winners in the minor categories were announced. Singer Kanye West also won a Grammy with Jesus Is King for Best Christian Album and nine-year-old Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z, who was one of the award-winning music videos of the year for Brown Skin Girl.

The recently deceased keyboardist Chick Corea has established himself in the field of jazz. His recording Trilogy 2 is the best jazz instrumental album of the year and he performed the best improvised jazz solo in the song All Blues.

The Czechs left empty-handed

The Grammy is one of the most important music awards in the world. 13,000 members of the American Academy of Music decide on nominations and awards. The award is given in approximately 80 categories.

The Czechs were also represented in them. Hammond player Ondřej Pivec could even win a prestigious award in two categories: for the best R&B album and R&B performance. He recorded the first with Gregory Porter, the second with The Baylor Project. And the recording of Bohemian Tales, which is a success of conductor Jakub Hrůša, was nominated for the best solo in classical music. In the end, however, only nominations remained in all cases.
