The end appears to be in sight for current calf fattening in the Netherlands

Calf sector:

* Dairy farmers use 30 percent of the calves to replace their dairy herd, 70 percent goes to the meat industry.

* More than 1.5 million calves are slaughtered in the Netherlands every year. Half comes from dairy farming, the remaining 750,000 are imported.

* About 10 percent of veal is consumed in the Netherlands, the other 90 percent goes abroad.

* There are about 1,600 veal farmers, 60 percent of which are contracted by the meat industry, 40 percent are independent entrepreneurs.
