Ireland today discontinued the use of a vaccine against coronavirus Covid-19, developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, in response to reports in other European countries that several people who received the vaccine had developed dangerous blood clots.
Irish Health Minister Steven Donley has said it is a precautionary step.
To date, the Irish population has received more than 110,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, which is about 20% of all Covid-19 vaccines injected in the country, the BBC reports.
Norway, Denmark and Iceland have also announced this week that they will temporarily stop using the AstraZeneca vaccine.
In Norway, three healthcare workers developed blood clots shortly after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine and had low platelet counts in their blood.
The World Health Organization has called on countries not to stop using AstraZeneca because there is no evidence that the vaccine is linked to blood clots.
