On February 28, 1991, the Osterstrasse underground station became the scene of a brutal crime early in the morning. A taxi driver (55) shot his ex-partner (51) with a large-caliber revolver, then turned the heavy weapon on himself.
As every morning, Ingeborg L. was on the way to her workplace, the former “Spar” market on the corner of Osterstrasse and Heussweg (today there is an “Edeka” market here). Artur W., her ex-partner, knew that. The gray-haired man, who was wearing a brown leather jacket, paced the station hall nervously and kept looking at his watch.
30 years ago in Hamburg: Murder in the Osterstraße subway station
At 6.30 a.m. Ingeborg L. left the subway with a colleague (31). Artur W. grabbed her arm. Ingeborg L. said to the colleague: “Go ahead.” Other passengers turned around when the 55-year-old shouted: “It’s over. Leave me alone! ”Then a shot was fired. Hit by a bullet in the head, Ingeborg L. collapsed, fatally injured. The perpetrator pointed the gun at his heart and pulled the trigger. He died a little later in the UKE.
Ingeborg L. came to Hamburg in 1982 after a failed marriage from Saxony-Anhalt. She left her daughter behind in the GDR at the time. The woman initially stayed with her mother in Eilbek, then quickly found work in the Eimsbüttel supermarket. She looked after the fruit and vegetable stand there and was extremely popular with customers and colleagues because of her friendliness.

Then Ingeborg L. met the taxi driver Artur W. The trained blacksmith from Wedel was involved in the construction of the Fehmarnsund Bridge, worked for Thyssen, and most recently drove a taxi. He, too, had a failed marriage behind him, from which three children had emerged. In 1990 his relationship with Ingeborg L. also failed – Artur W. drank, there had often been arguments. Also a Mercedes that he drove, but which she had financed with a loan.
Artur W. did not want to admit the separation and began to stalk his ex-partner. Drunk he appeared in the supermarket on Osterstrasse and mobbed Ingeborg L. in front of customers. The man often spent his evenings in Wedel pubs. Once when he was completely drunk, he said in a Greek restaurant: “If I had a sharp weapon, I would shoot myself.”

On February 28, 1991, he left his apartment in Wedel at 5 a.m., neighbors were awakened by the rumbling. The taxi driver got himself a sharp revolver and a little later he acted on his threat at the Osterstrasse station.
