Jakob-Stoll-Realschule: The tablet replaces the blackboard

The Jakob-Stoll-Realschule is regarded as an exemplary school for digital teaching. Mayor and city school councilor Judith Jörg found out why this is so during a visit on site. ?? The city of Würzburg is leasing digital technology, such as servers, stand-alone PCs, notebooks, projectors, document cameras and digital boards, as the material cost bearer for the local schools. The Jakob-Stoll-Realschule does not use all of this, but it is very well thought out ??, says the school mayor happily. The ?? Stoll ?? dispenses with the digital boards, for example, according to a press release from the city of Würzburg.

?? With the resources that the city of Würzburg provides for schools, we are coming very close to the ideal of the digital classroom ?? without having to have digital boards everywhere ??, explains school principal Alexander Röhrer. Instead, we question whether digital equipment options bring didactic added value. We check whether the use of technical possibilities promotes in-depth, future-oriented learning and, for example, supports requirements for schoolchildren such as communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. You don’t have to want everything that is offered on the digital market for schools. It takes less technology than is generally assumed.

Digital boards offer no added value, says Röhrer. ?? They are prone to electrical failure, have to be replaced quickly and are only used for Powerpoint presentations in 90 percent of cases. ??

Gone special way

The Jakob-Stoll-Realschule has therefore already gone a separate way since Easter 2020 and has been using MS Teams since the first Mebis collapse, recently with a cloud solution. For distance teaching, the city of Würzburg has the ?? Stoll ?? with 69 tablets through the support program ?? Bavaria digital II ?? equipped. This includes five charging cases. 65 other notebooks that are available through the sponsorship program? Loan Equipment for Schoolchildren? have been ordered will still be delivered

?? I have just come home from class ??, reports math, physics, IT teacher and the school system supervisor Thomas Skull. ?? In the first lesson, I had an online video conference with a presentation with a class, and over the weekend I created a video. In the second lesson, I gave the students a work assignment to work on independently, but I was always available for questions. As soon as the new tablets have been set up, students and teachers will be able to work with them in class, according to the press release.

Another positive effect of the advancing digitization in schools: ?? In fact, with our digital consultation days, we are reaching more parents who otherwise could not come to school ??, reports headmaster Röhrer. ?? We send letters to parents and school messages via the ESIS parent-student information system app. Parents can book consultation hours, view missed course material and report children sick. ??

Yes, the digital classroom entails additional work for teachers if they want to do it well, admits headmaster Röhrer. But the students benefit, because working safely with all digital applications can ?? as paradoxical as it may sound – open learning with all your senses.
