The Commission of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) explained the ban on the performance of the song “Katyusha” instead of the Russian anthem at international events. It is reported by Inside the Games.

The organization said that the concept of “any anthem associated with Russia” applies to “any song associated with Russia or having links to it.” Moreover, “Katyusha” is a patriotic song, as this song “contains a call to the soldiers to defend the Motherland.”

March 13 CAS banned Russia to use the song “Katyusha” instead of the anthem at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the summer of 2021 and in Beijing in February 2022. The court rejected a request filed by the Athletes’ Commission of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in January this year.

In December last year, CAS approved a two-year ban on Russian athletes from flying the national flag at the World Championships and the Olympics. During this period, Russia will also not be able to hold such tournaments.
