Tesco stores will soon disappear from Poland. On Friday, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection published a statement according to which the sale of Tesco Polska may be realized.
–
Officials stated that the takeover of Polish stores of the British Tesco chain by the Salling Group does not threaten to monopolize the market. Tesco Polska has been valued at PLN 900 million. The parties agreed the amount in June last year.
–
Netto will be bought by Tesco Polska
Salling Group is a Danish company that owns the Netto chain. It has already built 1,100 outlets of this brand in Europe, of which every third is located in Poland.
–
There are 320 Tesco stores in our country. The owner of Netto is to take over 301 of them, as well as the headquarters, two distribution centers and 14 out of 23 Tesco Polska petrol stations.
–
Before granting the permit for the transaction, UOKiK conducted an analysis of competition in the most important local markets. As it turned out, Netto will compete with other supermarkets and discounters everywhere.
–
This means that after the transaction is concluded, the structure of these markets will not change to the detriment of consumers, suppliers or entrepreneurs running smaller stores – says the President of UOKiK Tomasz Chróstny in a press release
–
The decision to withdraw Tesco stores in Poland was made by the British headquarters. The reason was worse financial performance in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The Tesco chain in Poland has ceased to bring profits for a long time. Other stores were regularly closed, which also resulted in group layoffs.
