Bullet trains between New York and Boston

The plans for the North Atlantic Rail Project are becoming more concrete – a high-speed train is to connect New York with Boston and other cities in the northeastern United States.

New York and Boston are just 184 miles apart as the crow flies. Nevertheless, the travel times between the two metropolises on the Atlantic are enormous. The North Atlantic Rail Project was founded in 2017 and aims to offer a high-speed train between the two metropolises and other cities in the northeast. As reported by bloomberg.com, such projects are to be increasingly supported under the Biden administration.

New York to Boston in under two hours

New York City is the epitome of a big city. The entire metropolitan area of New York has almost 8.5 million inhabitants. There are also commuters from Long Island and the neighboring US states. Boston in the state of Massachusetts is also an important financial and economic metropolis, which is why the connection between the two cities is essential. So far, you can travel between the two cities by car, train and plane. The journey by car takes over 3.5 hours and by plane about an hour. So far, trains are already running that also take over 3.5 hours for this connection. A travel time that is far too long, which is why the North Atlantic Rail Project was founded a few years ago. The aim is to connect the two metropolises by means of a high-speed train and to shorten the journey time by two hours.

More precisely, the journey time will then be only 1 hour 40 minutes and connect the cities of New York and Boston by means of a tunnel under the Long Island Sound. For this purpose, stopovers are to be set up in Hartford and Providence. The project receives a lot of support, especially under the new US President Joe Biden, and the US $ 105 billion North Atlantic Rail Project is intended to become a prime example of a more sustainable and faster way of traveling. Major investments in infrastructure with a major focus on the railways are also expected under the Biden administration. Joe Biden himself used the Amtrak train to commute between his home in Delaware and Washington, DC while serving as a senator.

At the same time, Amtrak is also expanding its offering on this route and installing the new Acela Express trains between New York and Boston. Currently, the trains only run between New York and Washington, DC

Conclusion on the new high-speed trains

The train as a means of transport is experiencing significantly higher demand again. Trains are environmentally friendly and can compete with aircraft if they perform well. A faster alternative is needed, especially on the route between New York and Boston – the high-speed train could soon be implemented with the support of the US President. In Asia, high-speed trains have been used successfully for a long time. European engineers also follow and monitor progress there.
