With live concerts and classical music 24 hours a day, the chickens live in the Le CouCou kennel. Sometimes they listen to Beethoven, other times to Mozart, but the truth is that they have sophisticated tastes, so much so that some go to VIP areas to enjoy the live shows even more.
The above responds to the concept of ‘happy chickens’, a disruptive practice that seeks to counteract, on the one hand, animal abuse and, on the other, foods with chemicals that cause health damage.
A group of researchers from the University of Bristol discovered that classical music is the preferred musical genre for laying hens, since once they heard it, these birds entered their nests 159% more frequently. Of course, the big revelation is that the music stimulated them and generated a feeling of happiness, which was later reflected in higher productivity and quality of the eggs. Under this method, hens can increase their production of 6% eggs, according to the study.
Carlos Páez is the owner of Le CouCou, one of the few egg producers that implements the concept of ‘happy chickens’ in Colombia. According to the expert, this idea frees these animals from the constant stress that they live in ordinary farms, where they are injected with chemicals to increase their productivity, although their natural capacity ends up being violated.
Likewise, Páez says that it was three years ago that ‘happy chickens’ emerged on his farm, from a case of cancer in a relative. From there, they came up with the idea of producing organic food.
“These eggs that we produce are organic, because their entire production process is natural. They do not have, for example, artificial light. Putting music on them to stimulate them, generates that the hens produce a high quality protein and an optimal egg to consume it at any age, since it is low in cholesterol. Being 100% natural, people tend to digest it much faster, ”says Páez.
However, there are still no official studies that show that these types of eggs are low in cholesterol. Within the commercial classification of eggs it is found that there are farm, Creole, organic and now happy hen.
Eggs are one of the most affordable foods in any home and there has also been a growing trend for healthy eating for several years. Due to the effects of the pandemic, it has accelerated and is reflected, for example, in the fact that last year the sale of eggs from ‘happy chicken’ companies grew 100%.
Le CouCou produces 300 buckets weekly, while Nestlé said that, from 2025, it will not produce eggs from caged chickens.
