Androgen hormones, or male hormones, are produced by the testicles and adrenal glands. These hormones control and coordinate the activity of the male sex glands and play an important role in preventing coronary heart disease because they contribute to the digestion and burning of fat. Androgen hormones are also secreted by women, but in much smaller amounts.
Andropause is basically a decrease in serum testosterone levels in men with age. This syndrome has several symptoms, somewhat similar to menopause in women. The most common conditions that are associated with andropause are: fatigue, reduced ability to concentrate, irritability and loss of interest in sexual intercourse.
A typical sign of andropause is a change in muscle mass, the appearance of fat deposits and erectile dysfunction.
Symptoms vary from person to person. Most often, the symptoms appear after the age of 50, when the production of male hormones gradually decreases. In most cases, the changes are more psychological. Thus, fatigue, irritability, depressive syndrome or loss of self-esteem may be the most common signs of andropause. Erections are also affected by this syndrome, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Some men may have other symptoms. Among them, the most common refer to memory disorders, asthenia, abdominal obesity, changes in the sweat glands and reduction of muscle mass at the same time with the appearance of fat deposits in typically female areas (buttocks, abdomen).
Andropause is considered the equivalent of menopause in women, but men do not have a benchmark, such as menstruation in women.
How can andropause be treated?
Treatment varies from case to case and is often hormonal in order to increase testosterone levels. It helps prevent the effects of aging and relieves the manifestations of andropause. At the same time, increasing testosterone levels is necessary to strengthen muscle mass. Hormone treatment should be applied with great discernment, given that it increases the risk of prostate cancer and disorders of the cardiovascular system. Apnea can occur as a side effect of testosterone administration, for example.
The treatment is contraindicated for men suffering from prostate cancer, prostate adenoma or major respiratory disorders.
Testosterone therapy is applied when there is a testosterone level between 2.5 and 3 ng / ml. Its purpose is to improve male libido and prevent the effects of aging. Other positive effects that have been observed in patients are: improved mood, improved sexual activity and sleep quality and even increased muscle mass. Doctors claim that the effects of therapy are visible, most often, after a few months.
