“The crisis caused by Covid-19 changed our plans, but last year we reacted proactively and adapted to the situation to find solutions for business continuity, while taking care of the safety and health of employees. Also in 2021, we will not stop and continue to improve, ensuring the production of popular products in accordance with our high quality standards, as well as create unprecedented innovations in the Latvian market. This year, we will install new, sustainable production equipment in our production facilities, improve the work environment and infrastructure, as well as add dozens of new products to our product range developed by the Orkla Latvija innovation team, ”emphasizes Toms Didrihsons, Chairman of the Board of Orkla Latvija.
The largest investment projects in 2021 will be the installation of a new candy glazing plant at the Laimas plant, a waffle cutting plant at the Staburadze plant, automation of sherbet production at the new Laimas plant and many others. In addition, a large part of the investment will significantly improve energy efficiency in several Orkla Latvija plants, including Ādaži chips and Spilva, helping the company to generate 305 tons less CO2 emissions, points out L.Mikša.
In 2021, Orkla Latvija continues to implement a sustainability strategy, which envisages a multifaceted approach to the work of the organization in five focus areas: nutrition and well-being, safe products, sustainable raw materials, environmental responsibility, care for employees and society. Each direction of activity has long-term goals and objectives, the fulfillment of which is gradual.
In the coming years, Orkla Latvija will focus on two significant investment projects in Ādaži – the new Laimas plant, as well as the new biscuit and waffle plant. Already this year, the Laima production plant will open its doors in Ādaži, while it is planned that a biscuit and waffle production plant will start operating next to it in 2022, the company’s representative reports.
As previously reported, Orkla Latvija’s parent company decided to build another plant in Ādaži, next to Laima’s new plant, so there will already be seven Orkla plants in Latvia, three of which will be located in Ādaži. The new plant will specialize only in the production of biscuits and waffles and will be the largest of its kind in the Baltic States and Scandinavia. In addition to construction, significant investments in new equipment and production lines will follow, creating the largest investments in the Latvian food production sector in recent years, which will create about 250 new jobs. In total, about 75% of the products produced at Orkla Biscuit Production will be exported.
