The border between the marketing director and the communication director is partly marked by a salary gap that continues to close. Where the former enjoys an average salary of 45,000 euros gross per year in Spain, the remuneration of the latter ranges from 37,500 euros.
These are some of the data of the Salary Trends Report prepared by Randstad Research, which analyzes the situation of different sectors of activity in Spain and the salaries of the professions in each of them. In the case of activities related to marketing and communication, it reflects the different perception of value that the person in charge of each area has within the organizations themselves, regardless of the growing role that the dircom has been playing. Two opposite profiles that, little by little, begin to coexist in their day to day.
The most veteran communication manager falls short of the salary band of his alter ego in marketing
Although logically the remuneration varies depending on factors such as experience or city in which it is practiced, the most veteran communication manager falls short of his alter ego’s salary band in marketing, although they do tend to equalize in the first years of trajectory.
According to the remuneration scheme drawn up by the consultancy, Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao offer the highest salaries for professionals in the sector, with a maximum remuneration of 75,000 euros for a dircom with more than 6 years of experience and 90,000 for a marketing and commercial manager. On the professional side in their first years as heads of these departments, the range is between 30,000 and 50,000 euros.
The situation changes when the focus shifts to other cities. In Valencia, the emoluments of an expert dircom are between 54,000 and 67,000 euros gross, while a marcom can earn from 58,000 to 81,000 euros, although at the beginning of the career both move between 30,000 and 50,000 euros.
Below this salary level would be managers with a job in Seville, where the maximum remuneration of a dircom exceeds that of the marcom, up to 68,000 euros compared to 60,000. A circumstance that also occurs in Malaga, where a salary of up to 64,500 euros is paid to the communication manager, while the marketing manager opts for 50,000 euros per year.
Outside of these positions, the study also examines the remuneration situation of communication and marketing technicians, who start from starting salaries of between 20,000 and 30,000 euros, but they can double those salaries after six years of experience. Situation very similar to that drawn for the brand manager or account manager. However, Randstad emphasizes that these are positions with remunerations that tend to increase in a notbale and stable way as the years progress.
However, as this medium has already stated, communication salaries in Spain are low compared to neighboring countries. Here only 20% of the sector earns 100,000 euros per year, while in Germany the percentage is close to 40% of workers, in Denmark 55% and in Switzerland 80%.
