HARRISON, NJ (March 9, 2021) – The New York Red Bulls have added Atlanta United left-back Andrew Gutman on a one-year inter-league loan, the club announced today. New York traded its third-round pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft and up to $ 50,000 in 2022 General Award Funds to Atlanta if certain performance conditions are met.
“We are excited to have Andrew join us,” said Chief of Sport Kevin Thelwell. “He has shown that he can play in MLS and has qualities that we believe will work in our style of play. He is a solid defender, who can contribute from the wings going up front, and he has the physical attributes to adapt to our system. ”
Gutman, 24, spent the last year and a half with FC Cincinnati, racking up 31 games in all competitions with an assist in 2,049 minutes played. After the 2020 season, he was the first selection in the 2020 MLS Re-Entry Draft by Atlanta United to obtain his MLS rights from Cincinnati.
“Andrew brings good experience that he has won in MLS,” said Technical Director Gerhard Struber. “He is strong with the ball and has good sense and intelligence when he goes up front, this will help us when we build attacking plays and we have to make good decisions in the last third.”
In college Gutman shone at Indiana University by winning the 2018 MAC Herman Trophy, an award that honors the best college soccer player in the United States. He scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in 23 games played during the 2018 season and guided the Hoosiers to the semifinals of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. After signing a four-year college career, in which he scored 20 goals and 17 Assists in 90 games as a defender, Gutman signed a three-year contract with Celtic FC on January 1, 2019.
After signing with Celtic FC, Gutman was loaned to USL Championship club Charlotte Independence on February 22, 2019. In Charlotte, he made 14 appearances in the starting lineup, scoring three goals and passing on goal in 1,260 minutes played. .
