BAH. You may have cockroaches in your coffee

When you get up in the morning – after a perhaps a little too short night – nothing beats a steaming cup of coffee. If you’re not in a rush, it’s even fun to enjoy it in bed. Just wake up. But did you know that that cup of steaming happiness might contain cockroaches?

That may sound a bit strange and the statement therefore requires a word of explanation. Unless you live in questionable hygienic conditions, those pieces of cockroach will of course not come from you. Instead, they are processed with the coffee beans.

Cockroaches and other pests

At least that’s what Dr. Karan Raj claims. The British doctor is very popular on TikTok because he explains medical phenomena in human language and also debunks myths. This time, however, he astonished his followers with a very disconcerting fact. According to Raj, about 10% of all coffee beans contain traces of cockroaches and other pests.

Harmless

Of course, those bugs are not added to the beans on purpose. However, they work their way between the unroasted coffee beans and then it is impossible to get the pests out completely. The insects are therefore roasted and ground into coffee. Raj emphasizes that it is small amounts, so that it remains safe to consume the coffee. It is therefore not dangerous, but you cannot call the phenomenon very tasty.
