Helmets can save lives. This is nothing new. But ex-Formula 1 star Felipe Massa almost went blind in Budapest in 2009 when a metal part pierced his helmet. The Brazilian was seriously injured and was out for the remainder of the season.
A similar accident happened to Pierre Gasly at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix. “A piece of carbon hit my helmet,” said the Frenchman at the time. “That scared me a lot. I thought the thing went straight into my eye.” Nothing happened to Gasly back then, thanks to the further development of the helmets.

The FIA has now posted a video on its Instagram channel showing how modern Formula 1 helmets are tested. Metal disks, for example, are fired at the helmet from a short distance at 250 km / h. The FIA wrote that the Eurofighter jets, among other things, have to withstand similar tests.
