Juno Prize: Cowboys Fringants take on The Weeknd

Les Cowboys Fringants got their first nomination for the upcoming Juno Awards by becoming one of the rare French-speaking Quebec artists to win a citation in the People’s Choice category.

The competition will be sizeable, however, to obtain this Juno postponed following a popular vote. The Quebec group will play elbow with the stars Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd.

The latter, unhappy finalist for the same prize for five years, points as the big favorite after the immense success of his song Blinding Lights (over two billion plays on Spotify, to date) and his recent Super Bowl halftime performance.

Other artists shortlisted for People’s Choice are Curtis Waters, JP Saxe, Lennon Stella, Tate McRae, Ali Gatie and NAV.

Avril Lavigne, winner of the award in 2019 and 2020, is not among the finalists this year.

Given the enthusiasm for their success America is crying, Les Cowboys Fringants will have to keep an eye on when nominations are unveiled in all other categories at 11 a.m.

The Quebec group is the first French-speaking artist in Quebec to obtain a nomination since Cœur de pirate in 2016. Previously, Serge Fiori (2015), Ginette Reno (2012), Maxime Landry (2010), Claude Dubois (2008), Marie-Élaine Thibert (2005) were cited for their music in French.

Celine Dion, whether for albums in French or English, has garnered several nominations over the years, without ever winning the trophy.

Quebecers Arcade Fire, Simple Plan (winner in 2006), Grégory Charles, The Lost Fingers, Leonard Cohen and Bobby Bazini were also cited thanks to the success of English albums.

The 50th annual Juno Awards will be held on May 16.
